What is a Disc Harrow?

Disc Harrow

A Disc Harrow is a tractor attachment used in gardens and fields to help till, dig up, and freshen the ground for new crops. Another use of a disc harrow is to pulverize and recycle old crop residue while making crop furrows. There are a number of different styles of disc harrows however the two basic types are Offset Disc Harrow and Tandem Disc Harrow. The Offset Disc Harrow is made up of a metal frame and two sections of concaved discs. The offset disc harrow is normally heavier than the tandem disc harrow and is used with large disc blades with increased disc spacing. This is great to use for a first round till to get a deeper ground penetration whereas the Tandem Disc as four sections of discs and better equipped to break down clumps of soil into smaller pieces allowing the water to seep easily into the soil and increase ground aeration.

What About Disc Harrow Discs?

Like the Disc Harrow there are a few different types of discs. The differences range in sizes from 26" to 40" and styles such as straight, concaved, solid, and notched each with its own purpose. The most commonly used discs today are the concaved with notches. The notches are used to chop and cut up old field crop left overs of stalks and leaves also known as Stover such as corn or soybean. When running over the remaining crop residue with a disc harrow you are mixing it into the top soil which helps speed up the decay process and loosens up the ground. Disc harrows also makes plowing easier to work with and manage.

Why are the Discs Concaved?

Disc Harrow Discs

The curvature of disc harrows discs is curved to give you more control of the dirt. Take a flat disc blade which will cut just as deep as a concaved blade if it’s set at the right cutting angle however you have no control of the dirt. The dirt just slides past to one side of the disc leaving exposed trash and also requires more pulling power. Another problem with flat discs is that they leave deeper furrows under the surface and the soil becomes more sensitive to ground pressures. The curvature of discs creates less resistant’s when pulling and also help preserve the longevity of the disc from wearing quickly, disc breakage, buckling and heavy draft.
